Airports in Iceland
Navigation and communications services
The Airport and Navigations Systems Division is responsible the operation of electric and electronic systems and associated project implementation in the areas of air navigation and communications.
The design of air traffic routes, together with the installation and operation of air navigation equipment, is an important part of the services provided. For an aircraft to be able to proceed on its way guided by air navigation equipment, the aviation information division must calculate and consider carefully various take-off, in-flight, and approach aspects such as whether and how obstacles may affect the flight. This factor is very important for aviation safety.
A complex process is involved and it is customary to cross-check the design of flight routes multiple times before flight-tests are conducted.
ISAVIA conducts flight-calibrations in Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Once the design and testing of air traffic routes are completed, charts are created and published in AIP Iceland.
All domestic Airports in Iceland, except some privately owned landing places, are operated by ISAVIA under the
jurisdiction of the Ministry of Transport and Tourism.
